As 2019 comes to an end, the SUN067 has easily been one of the most popular watches of the year.  There’s a lot to love in this piece, and the love it has received is absolutely warranted. It’s a great mix of vintage design with some modern technology and dimensions.  Few brands can do these reissues like Seiko.

The SUN067 is a clear reinvention of the great Seiko World Time watch that was introduced in 1964 as the official timekeeper of the Olympics.  Aesthetically, they’re very similar: They both feature a white dial, a circle around the perimeter of the dial that separates it from the chapter ring, small text around the internal bezel, a small red GMT hand, and a few other cues.  In this sense, the two watches are extremely similar, though separated by almost 60 years.  The watches start to differ when you look at the specifications.  A Seiko Kinetic movement powers the SUN067. An automatic movement powers the Vintage World Time.  The SUN067 is a big 43mm wide versus the smaller vintage design of its time. Crown positions differ, as do the finish of the dials.

One of the great selling points of the SUN067 is the price.  When it was released, this could be had under $200.  The vintage counterpart runs for anywhere between $700-$1,500.  The SUN067 is a great alternative and affordable option for those not having the cash to spend on the vintage classic.

As is sadly becoming the norm, the SUN067 has become just another in the growing trend of “sold out” Seiko pieces that become unavailable and prices increase in the preowned market.  Sadly, this watch can’t be found new anymore, so your only option to find on is through used markets.

The SUN067 has also suffered from the modern trend of big watches.  At 43mm, this is substantial on the wrist.  As is my common wish, this would have been perfect at 39mm, but with the amount of times I say this, I wonder if I’m hopelessly optimistic for this change in trend.

The bracelet on this piece leaves a lot to be desired. However, that is not a problem, as this watch looks fantastic on just about any strap.

The SUN067 is a fantastic piece that has struck a perfect chord in the eyes of many.  Even at the $400 price tag that I see them going for used, I would argue they’re a great alternative to the great and classic Vintage World Time.  This watch has been a fan favorite for a reason.  You won’t be disappointed.
