Watch Talk

Q:  I'm looking for an affordable watch to use during outdoor activities.  Do you all have any recommendations?

A:

Every watch enthusiast needs a reliable watch for outdoor activities.  Whether it’s hiking, mowing the lawn, playing sports, or enjoying nature with a relaxed stroll in the park, having an appropriate watch is important.

Quartz or Mechanical?

For any recommendation, regardless of price or style, this is always the first question that needs to be answered.  A few days ago, we discussed the benefits and shortcomings of both kinds of movements.  Deciding what movement suits your needs best is the first step towards choosing the best watch for you.

Quartz

G-Shock

There’s a saying around watch circles that says, “With a few battery changes, a G-shock will outlive its owner.”  This really is not an exaggeration.  There are some absolutely incredible tough test videos around the Internet that really showcase the ruggedness of these watches.  The priority of G-Shocks is toughness.  They’ll survive any conditions you put it through.  With a wide range of cases, colors, features and prices, there’s sure to be one that fits your needs.

Casio MDV106

We discussed affordable dive watch options here and recommended this very watch.  The list of dive watches is vast and varied, however this is one of the most affordable options in the market that has proven time and time again to be a great candidate to be your wrist.  Even if you’re not planning on getting your watch wet, the toughness this Casio offers makes it a great choice for an outdoor watch.

Mechanical

Seiko SARB017

If you are a watch wearer that refuses to wear quartz, Seiko has an abundance of outdoor watches that aren’t powered by batteries.  A quick Amazon search gives you more than enough options to choose from.  However, a quick look at our Instagram shows we are personally huge fans of the SARB017, dubbed the Alpinist.  The shock resistant case will endure being on your wrist during outdoor activities.  Plus, who can resist that beautiful green and gold dial?

Hamilton Khaki Field

Do you want to go with a Swiss option? The Hamilton Khaki is perhaps the best field watch in our price range.  Powered by a Swiss movement, you’re getting a very reliable watch.  Visibility is no problem with the legible dial design and generously applied luminescent paint; it is also available in a different colors and dial variations.  It really doesn’t get much better than this.

Conclusion

Appropriate wrist wear is important for outdoor activities. It’s crucial to judge what you’re going to put your watch through.  If you’re going diving, make sure your watch has proper water resistance.  If you’re going to be playing extreme sports, it’s best to stay away from mechanical pieces.  If you’re going to be out at night, good luminescent paint is important.  Regardless of your activity of choice, one of these recommendations is bound to have everything necessary to be your outdoor companion.
